The Summer Slide
The end of the year is fast approaching and your little one has learnt so much and grown in so many areas. This is a great time to look back at how they have developed over the year and celebrate their many achievements. I’m sure everyone is looking forward to summer and your child is looking forward to a well deserved break over the school holidays. While it is important to take the time over the summer holidays to rest and relax, we sometimes find that children return to school in the new year having taken a step back in their learning. This is often referred to as the “summer slide.” Want to keep your children engaged in learning over the summer break? Here are a few ideas…
- Build vocabulary by exposing children to new experiences and discussing the activities and adventures you participate in as a family.
- Encourage children to keep a journal over the school holidays. This may be as simple as a picture with labels or a few sentences depending on the ability level of your child.
- Maths in the car- spending a bit of time in the car over the holiday period? I find this a great time to practice counting, addition and subtraction or even times tables.
- Enjoy sitting out in the sunshine with a good book!
Bee Ready Learning is also here to support your child in starting 2020 with confidence. We will be offering a three day intensive program in January to help prepare your child for the year ahead. We will run two programs-
Group 1- children beginning prep in 2020
This group will focus on letter sounds, recognizing and writing their name and number skills.
Group 2- children beginning grade 1 in 2020
This group will focus on reading strategies, spelling and writing skills as well as number skills, addition and subtraction.
Limited spaces available- small groups mean your child will get the support they deserve from our qualified primary school teachers.
